Swads cannot connect to your Synology NAS

Troubleshoot common DSM and Download Station connection problems.

Identify the failing step

The connection flow prepares an address, finds DSM services, signs in, and fetches the NAS overview. The point where it stops helps identify the cause:

  • No response from the address: check the network, host, port, or QuickConnect
  • The DSM sign-in service cannot be found: confirm the address points to DSM
  • Invalid username or password: verify the DSM credentials
  • Sign-in works but the task queue denies access: check Download Station permissions

Check in order

  1. Confirm the NAS is on and DSM and Download Station are running.
  2. Confirm the NAS is reachable from the network used by your iPhone or Mac.
  3. Check the QuickConnect ID, server address, protocol, and port.
  4. For a direct address, run Diagnostic Connection in the Add Instance form.
  5. Confirm the DSM account has permission to use Download Station.
  6. If you use a domain, confirm its HTTPS certificate is valid.

Use a direct connection to isolate the cause

If a direct connection fails, try QuickConnect. If QuickConnect fails, try the NAS IP address on your local network to separate account problems from network path problems.

  • The local IP works: the account and Download Station permission are probably valid. Continue with QuickConnect or external network troubleshooting.
  • The local IP also fails: check DSM, the port, account, and permissions first.
