Add your first Synology NAS
Add a Synology NAS to Swads and complete your first DSM sign-in.
Connect with either a QuickConnect ID or a direct NAS address. If you are unsure which to use, start with QuickConnect.
Before you begin
You need:
- A Synology NAS with the Download Station package installed from DSM Package Center and running
- A DSM account with permission to use Download Station
- A QuickConnect ID or a NAS host address reachable from your device
Direct connections use HTTPS and DSM HTTPS port 5001 by default. Enter the actual port if you changed it in DSM.
Choose a connection method
| Method | Use it when |
|---|---|
| QuickConnect ID | You want Swads to ask Synology for reachable DSM addresses |
| Direct address | You know a reachable NAS IP address or domain and its DSM port |
QuickConnect does not remove the need for DSM credentials or Download Station permission. It only helps Swads locate the NAS.
Add the NAS instance
- Open Swads and go to the instance list.
- Choose Add Instance.
- Select QuickConnect or a direct address.
- Follow the form to enter the connection details, DSM username, and password.
- If two-factor authentication is enabled, enter the current one-time password (OTP).
- Complete sign-in and save the instance.
Examples in this documentation use https://your-host.swads.app:5001, QuickConnect ID swads-demo, and username swads-user. These are placeholders, not shared credentials or a public Swads NAS; enter your own DSM connection details.
What “Stay signed in” saves
When Stay signed in is enabled, Swads stores the password in Apple Keychain and allows it to sync through iCloud Keychain. The DSM sign-in session and device identifier remain local to each device.
If you leave it disabled, Swads does not save the account password. You will need to authenticate again after the current session expires.
Confirm the connection
The NAS appears in the instance list and becomes selected. Setup is complete when Overview shows Ready and the task queue loads.
If the instance does not become ready, see Swads cannot connect to your Synology NAS.
Add another NAS later
Return to the instance list and choose Add Instance again. Swads keeps the connection settings and Download Station task list for each NAS separate. See Manage multiple NAS devices.
